About the Concourse Gallery
The Concourse Gallery, programmed with the help of the Cultural Arts Commission is located at 3600 Tremont Road, Upper Arlington in the Municipal Services Center. The gallery has 181 linear feet and 3500 square feet in which to hang and install two and three-dimensional pieces of art.
The Cultural Arts Commission plans for visual arts exhibitions in this space January through November. The Visual Arts Committee is comprised of practicing visual artists, administrators and patrons. The Visual Arts Committee offers an open call for artists; submissions will be reviewed on a quarterly schedule: January, April, July and November. Artwork not selected for the Concourse Gallery maybe considered for exhibition through the Arts in Work Spaces program.
The Visual Arts Committee balances the desire and need for exhibition space and exposure by professional and community artists. International, multi-cultural and regional professional artists are exhibited, as well as work by emerging artists and by student artists in Upper Arlington schools.
The City of Upper Arlington is one of the few cities in the U.S. to have a permanent visual arts collection. Pieces from this collection are displayed throughout the City’s six Municipal buildings. A catalog of this collection was published in 1997 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Cultural Arts Commission.
Works exhibited in the Concourse Gallery are insured by the City of Upper Arlington. The gallery is located in a public gathering area and therefore, the gallery is considered “low security.” All citizen groups meeting in the space are notified that they are prohibited from moving, removing, obscuring or touching the art in the exhibition.
Art pieces on exhibition may be sold or may be “not for sale.” All sales transactions are handled by the artists, staff helps to facilitate this process. The Cultural Arts Commission does require a 10% commission. All art “sold” or “not sold” must remain in the gallery until the end of the exhibition.
Concourse Gallery Philosophy
The Concourse Gallery, a public reception area of the Municipal Services Center is home to our Visual Arts Series. The City of Upper Arlington has dedicated this space to the arts for over 30 years. Each exhibit features interactive pieces such as gallery guides and discussion prompts located throughout the gallery. Artspeak, a concourse conversation on art series of free lectures and Concourse Gallery tours make this venue accessible to visitors of all ages and art-sophistication.
Under the direction of the Staff of the Cultural Arts Division, the Cultural Arts Commission volunteers have established the Visual Arts Committee as part of its commitment to the visual arts in Upper Arlington. The Visual Arts Committee is a standing committee of the Cultural Arts Commission and its members are established authorities in the discipline of visual arts. The goal of the Visual Arts Committee is to provide exhibits that explore two- and three-dimensional work encompassing varied themes and ideas. Fine art, fine craft and applied art are all considered when programming the Concourse Gallery. Many successful exhibits have included themes such as culture, abstraction, source, symbolism, movement, decorative arts, human form, portrait, found objects and installation. The Visual Arts Committee may also create group shows that say something about a certain theme, trend in art, or group of associated artists while expanding the multi-cultural experience of the gallery. The Committee works to balance the desire and need for exhibition space and exposure by professional, emerging and community-based artists. Our Visual Arts Committee programs the eleven exhibitions in a variety of ways, from juried exhibitions to curated exhibitions to building partnerships with other galleries. Cultural Arts Division Staff often enlists the expertise of others in the arts to program the Concourse Gallery. By utilizing the talents of a variety of sources in our own community and beyond we are able to enhance the gallery experience for our community. The Visual Arts Committee is committed to bringing quality artwork to the community of Upper Arlington.
The Concourse Gallery is a place for work that is challenging, thought provoking and dynamic. Although primarily concerned with providing a space to show works of visual art, the Visual Arts Committee is innovatively integrating other art disicplines with visual arts in the Concourse Gallery and plans to host other artistic activities, such as music concerts or poetry readings in the space. Through the variety of arts programming provided, the Concourse Gallery acts as a vital and active resource for the community, raising awareness, accessibility and advancement of the arts.
