Arts Festival Marks The Last Celebration Of Summer In UA

It’s hard to believe we are already reaching the end of summer, but the pending Labor Day weekend is a sure sign we are moving into fall. Each year in UA, we get to enjoy one last warm weather community gathering, and lucky for us it’s our signature community event – the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival. This year, we invite you to join our Cultural Arts Division for a grand celebration of the arts on Monday, September 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the picturesque Northam Park.

The primary purpose of the Festival is to explore and stock up on a variety of media from the 200 talented artists displaying and selling their works of art. Be it paintings, photography, sculpture for the garden, unique jewelry designs or one-of-a-kind pottery, there’s something for everyone at this popular one-day event, and at every price point.

But there’s so much more to experience at the Festival.

Sit back and enjoy a variety of musical performances, from country rock to jazz, at the main Performance Stage. If you have an urge to enjoy some new dance moves or help create the music, visit the Art Activities Stage, for a drum circle, and Irish, folk and belly dancing. Later in the day, witness a battle of the poets in an exciting poetry slam.

Whatever your age, if there’s an artist within you just waiting to get out, then the Arts Activities Area has something for you. Throw a pot on a potter’s wheel, enjoy interactive theater, adorn a painted mural with bottle tops, make and learn to play a drum, create your own sculpture and more.

To complete the day, the Festival offers a variety of refreshments from area restaurants and organizations.

The Labor Day Arts Festival requires year-round planning by Cultural Arts Division staff and Commission members. As the event nears, additional divisions become involved, from Police and Fire handling traffic and safety issues to the Parks & Forestry, Solid Waste, Streets and Electrical divisions providing the event’s logistical needs. So, when you see a City employee working at the Festival, take a moment to thank him/her for giving up time with friends and family to make your Labor Day Holiday special.

For details of the Festival, call the Cultural Arts Division at 583-5310, or visit www.ua-ohio.net.

Kioka Avenue Waterline Replacement
Early this week, work got underway to complete the replacement of a waterline on Kioka Avenue, with this phase of the project expected to last approximately two weeks. Residents in the area bounded by Fishinger, Zollinger and Mountview roads, and Sunset Drive may experience daytime disruptions in water service during this time period. Homes in the affected area were recently notified of this project by an automated phone call. If you have any questions about this project, please contact our Engineering Division at 583-5360.

Parking Lot Replacement at Firehouse #71 on Arlington Avenue
Work begins week of September 2
The concrete parking lot at Firehouse #71 at the Mallway is rapidly reaching the end of its useful life, with a full replacement project scheduled to begin next week. The work is expected to take approximately 90 days. At certain points during the project, it may be necessary to place no parking signs in front of the Firehouse to accommodate emergency and staff vehicles, but every effort will be made to minimize any impact on the surrounding Mallway business district. If you have any questions, contact the Fire Division at 583-5100.
