The 2016 Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) should have recently arrived in your mailbox, providing an overview of your City’s financial health. Taxes and finances are a complicated thing on a personal level, let alone at the City or State level, and the PAFR is our attempt to give you the “CliffsNotes” version of a much larger and more complex document, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

Driving around UA, I can’t help but think about how beautiful our community is in the summer, from the meticulously cared for lawns and gardens of our neighborhoods to the vibrant plantings and baskets adorning the fronts of restaurants and businesses. We also get to enjoy a number of community “bright spots” – public areas that have been beautified by our Parks & Forestry Division.

More often than not, issues with nuisance wildlife result because we humans have not taken the appropriate precautions to make our yards and homes unappealing to opportunistic passersby. By taking a few simple steps to manage our solid waste output and remove possible food sources, we can do much to keep unwanted visitors from taking up residence.

Unusually rainy weather has boosted mosquitoes' favorite breeding habitats—standing water—so it's more important than ever for us all to do our part to check for and address any receptacles or low areas on our properties that can collect water.

From first-hand experience with my son, I can tell you that this is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to your community.
