The City's Community Development Department coordinates the many aspects involved in Upper Arlington's growth, development and preservation, with the goal of enhancing the aesthetic appearance and economic vitality of the community. In 2016, the Department reviewed and inspected more than $100 million worth of construction projects, the highest year in the City's history.  Over 3,000 permits were reviewed, again the highest on record.

Staff provides assistance to residents, contractors, developers and design professionals who wish to build or remodel structures with the community, while also working with business owners who wish to relocate or expand their operations. The department prides itself on thoughtfully helping a variety of customers through the necessary zoning, permitting, inspection and economic development processes. The department is comprised of three divisions: Building, Planning and Property Maintenance.
  • Building Division: Reviews plans and inspects construction of all new and/or modified residential and commercial structures;
  • Planning Division: Directs the development and redevelopment of the community through Master Planning and enforcing the City's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO); and
  • Property Maintenance Division: Ensures that all residential and commercial properties are properly maintained over time.
