City of Upper Arlington, Ohio

Planning Division

The City's Planning Division works with residents, businesses, contractors and developers to ensure that home or business improvement projects meet the City's zoning requirements, primarily in terms of use and location.  Planning Division staff administers the award-winning Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and oversees the Master Plan which seek to enhance redevelopment in commercial areas by creating high quality, dense, pedestrian-oriented environments primarily along the City's arterial streets, as well as to protect Upper Arlington's outstanding residential neighborhoods.  The Division is also a guardian of the City's Master Plan, which provides direction for the City's future land use decisions.  Planning Staff works closely with the Board of Zoning and Planning (BZAP) and City Council to ensure proposed development is appropriate for the community.

Please feel free to contact our Planning Division if you have any questions about your future home or business improvement project.
Lane Avenue Study Area

insight2050 is a collaborative initiative led by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, Columbus 2020, Urban Land Institute-Columbus, and other public/private stakeholders that is looking at future development and population patterns in Central Ohio over the next 30+ years.  The region is expected to add nearly 500,000 new residents, where 81% of the new growth will be households without children.  This would create approximately 300,000 new homes, 300,000+ new jobs and more than 1 billion square feet of non-residential building space.  This study will lay out four different development scenarios, and recommend how communities should brace for the growth and change in market demand.  The study includes Upper Arlington as a compact area that should encourage walkable neighborhoods, more mixed-use environments, more mixed age/income communities, smaller residences and more transportation options.  The Lane development on Lane Avenue was cited as an example project that has responded to changing market demands.  Read the Scenario Results here and view a presentation from MORPC here.
