Pumpkin Patrol & Beggar's Night

Beggar's Night 2017
6-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 31

To help ensure the safety of children on Beggar's Night, the Police Division coordinates Pumpkin Patrol. Marked City trucks with City employee volunteers patrol neighborhoods and are available to assist young children if they become lost, scared, hurt, or in other need of assistance, and to pass out candy. All trucks are equipped with two-way radios to alert appropriate emergency personnel.

The division offers the following safety tips to ensure a safe, fun evening for all:

Tips for Kids:

  • Plan your trick-or-treat route in advance and show your parents.
  • Make sure your costume does not block your vision.
  • Trick-or-treat in a group or with an adult, and stay together.
  • Never enter a stranger's house to receive a treat.
  • Walk, don't run and stay on sidewalks.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street and cross at crosswalks.
  • If you are wearing dark clothing, carry a flashlight so you can be seen, or add something reflective.
  • If the weather is cold, dress warmly underneath your costume.
  • Consider face paint in place of a mask so that your vision is not impacted.
  • Make sure your costume is not too long that it might trip you and wear shoes that are good for walking.
  • Be cautious of dogs, they may be unsure of your appearance and act aggressively.
  • Do not trick-or-treat at houses that have their porch light off.
  • Stay away from candles or fires.
  • Accept treats at the door. Never go inside a house if you don't know the homeowners.
  • Avoid eating any candy until your parents have checked it for you.

Tips for Parents:

  • Be sure to know where your child will be trick-or-treating.
  • Have them take a cell phone if you aren't going with them.
  • Avoid costumes that are flammable, and obstruct vision or movement.
  • Supply your child with either light colored clothing, something reflective, or a flashlight.
  • Check your child's Halloween candy before he/she eats any. If you think anything has been tampered with, notify Police
  • Quiz your child on all the safety rules before he/she leaves the house.

Tips for Homeowners:

  • If you are planning to pass out candy, keep your home well lit.
  • If you won't be home, keep the lights off so that kids aren't encouraged to approach your property.
  • Keep your front yard, path and driveway clear of things that could trip young children.
  • Use battery-powered Halloween decorations instead of anything with a real flame.

All motorists should be sure to drive slowly through neighborhoods on Beggars' Night and to be on the look out for groups of children in costumes.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) has set the following "Trick or Treat" dates through 2019:
